Healing from trauma and anxiety…
Trauma, big or small, happens to most of us…
Most people experience trauma during their lives.
Sometimes it’s Big “T” trauma that results from a single traumatic incident, such as a car accident, that overwhelms the system.
Sometimes trauma shows up as Little “t” traumas which are non-life-threatening traumas that are nonetheless emotionally overwhelming – such as emotional abuse, loss of a pet, or relationship trauma, such as an overly critical parent.
These can leave you feeling insecure, feeling self-doubt, anxious and disconnected.
When something traumatic happens, your mind may continue to hold on to the troubling memories, sounds, feelings, sensations, or thoughts. It may feel as if the trauma is locked or “stuck” inside… triggered by different situations that may or may not seem connected.
At times, you may feel helpless because you are not able to control what is happening in your mind or your body; this is because you are re-experiencing the emotions and sensations that are connected with the old experience.
Engaging the brain and body in the healing process…
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an interactive therapy that taps into your mind’s natural healing ability. The mind can often heal itself naturally – the same way as the body does.
EMDR helps facilitate the activation of the brain’s inherent ability to process and integrate traumatic information that got “stuck” by targeting negative thoughts and scripts, reprocessing them, and replacing them with positive thoughts.
This happens through bilateral stimulation, which is like REM sleep and helps the right and left hemispheres of the brain to process and integrate the difficult experiences.
The main concept behind EMDR is that it uses eye movements…
…and other types of bilateral movements and bilateral stimulation to help someone process disturbing thoughts.
This can be visual, auditory, or tactile (touch); it is a rhythmic left-right pattern that works by alternately stimulating the right and left sides of your brain. It is a safe technique that has a relaxation effect, decreasing anxiety.
Once you’ve reprocessed the “stuck” memories, you won’t have to relive those difficult past experiences.
EMDR has been shown to be very effective in treating trauma and post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD). It is also quite effective in helping to reduce anxiety and can help improve mood for those who are feeling depressed.
Get the most out of therapy… and your life… with EMDR.
EMDR can accelerate the process of therapy by resolving the impact of your past traumas and allowing you to live more fully in the present.
Transforming negative beliefs can improve your relationships, work performance, creativity, health, and more. By quieting the voice that says “I can’t” or “why bother,” you unlock your true potential. It’s valuable for everybody, not just people who are consciously suffering.
